GOOBANG NATIONAL PARK:
The Goobang National Park was designated a NSW National Park in 1995. It was originally named Hervey Range by John Oxley in 1817. Approximately 42,600 hectares in size it is accessed near Peak Hill (off the Newell Highway) 30 km north-east of Parkes.
The park forms the 55 km stretch of the far-western foothills of the Great Dividing Range populated by Flora and fauna from both eastern and western NSW.
Picnicking, walking, bush camping, viewing are all things you can do in the Goobang. The Caloma Trig lookout offers wonderful views and there are picnic and camping areas at Wanda wadong and Greenbah.

There is something for everyone who has a interest in prehistoric wildlife - from the earliest jellyfish, to even the scull of a 'tiny' ancestor of T.Rex. The largest fossil fish on display anywhere in Australia, called Xiphactinus, who lived during the time of the dinosaurs is on display (approx. 4.5 metres long - surely every fishermans dream catch).
The Peak Hill gold mine operated between 1893 and 1917.
Just a stroll from Caswell Street (the main street) Peak Hill - the Open Cut Experience includes both the historic works and the more recent mines with several walking paths and viewing platforms. This open cut gold mine provides a great example of mining techniques used historically and today.
Self guided tours are now available daily (FREE ENTRY) between 9am and 4pm (closed Christmas Day & Good Friday).
Peak Hill is approx. 50 km north of Parkes. It's history is linked with the discovery of gold in 1889 but it is also an area rich in agriculture.
Located on the Newell Highway between Parkes and Dubbo it provides handy access to major attractions in both areas.
With it's late 1800s early beginnings you'll find heritage buildings around town - the older section of the Peak Hill hospital dates back to the early 1900s and has gained National Trust recognition.
